York River

Access point 15, Algonquin South. Base camp set up on the south east side of Byers Lake, the site that you come across first on the southern shore is better than this one, but it was occupied when I arrived. Lots of great day trips from this location. For more detail on this trip please visit & follow forward the photo links on right:

The middle of Sept is the best time for peace and quiet. The trees are changing colours. The fish are biting and the bugs are gone.Lots of wild life.

Lower Twin Falls Site

The Oxtounge River
Rating:
Camp Date:

The Oxtounge River offers a great 2-3 day getaway linear trip. I was dropped off by Algonquin Outfitters, they shuttled me to Tea Lake Dam (I decided to skip Canoe & Tea Lake to get on the river right away). After a 3.5 hour solo paddle I arrived at the first of three campsites that are found on the Twin Falls section. I would stay on this site if I knew that the third one was reserved - this one I would rate @ 2. Skip the second site (1.5) as it mediocre at best and head down to the third site that is on the last set of rapids - it’s the coolest of the three. Keep in mind that all three of these sites are not very private; the portage basically takes traffic right through the site. The reason for the average rating for the site is the privacy issues - other than that - great location!

Island - North West Point

Little Island Lake
Rating:

This was my first experience with interior camping in Algonquin Park. Short canoe from Smoke Lake with two portages - both approx 1000m.
We stayed on the first campsite on the north west point of the island on Little Island Lake. 5 of us stayed comfortably in 3 tents with lots of room to spare. Nice swimming from site. Very sheltered campsite - Lots of privacy. There are trails on the island which provide hours of enjoyment. My friend actually swam around the whole island as I paddled the canoe beside.
Nice, easy introduction to interior camping.
